BB2G Calendar: November - I Am The Face Of

Oh hey! *waves excitedly*

We’ve been working hard behind the scenes here at the Band to bring you a most special gift for the new year. We’ve been working on creating a calendar. I KNOW. It’s very exciting indeed.

We knew we wanted to feature some of our very own Band members, but we also wanted to feature some of the conditions that we are the face of. Because here at the Band we are the face of many things, and we want people to know that we’re not afraid to own those things and talk about them.

In addition to asking 13 folks to take a pretty picture for us, we also sat down with them to discuss what condition each is the face of, and what they have to say about it.

Introducing our very own Cindy, who is up in November 2013 and representing the face of Domestic Violence.

What brought you to the Band?

I can’t say ‘no’ to Aunt Becky. She sent out a call for stories. I sent one. Later, she sent out a call for help. I’m honored to contribute however I can.

How has this condition changed your life?

It has made me appreciate what I have now, with my Sunshine—a reasonably healthy relationship.

What advice would you give to others about your condition?

You don’t have to live like I did. You deserve better.

What myth about your condition do you wish people would stop believing?

My mom wondered why I was doing this, because when she thinks of victims of domestic violence, she thinks of the woman who has to hide because her life is in danger. Domestic violence is more pervasive, more insidious, more widespread than that. Not all of us become the Lifetime movie of the week, yet it affects us just as greatly, just as deeply.

If you had one day to do anything, with no limitations, what would you do?

As little as possible. In my Manolos.

Where is your favorite place, real or imaginary, and why is it your favorite?

Cuba, because it is forbidden.

What is your favorite dessert?

Chocolate peanut butter cookie cheesecake at Copeland’s Cheesecake Bistro. It is sex on a plate.

Who is your hero, and why?

My mom. Because her love has never wavered. Never. She is also the strongest person I think I will ever meet.

About

Band Back Together is a group weblog that provides educational resources as well as a safe, moderated, supportive environment to share stories of survival. Through the power of real stories written by real people, we can work together to destigmatize mental illness, abuse, rape, baby loss and other traumas so that we may learn, grow, and heal.

On Band Back Together, we put a face to things not normally discussed. We are the face of depression. We are the face of baby loss. We are the face of mental illness. We are the face of abuse. We are the face of rape. We are the face of SURVIVORS and we are proud to be here. We wear our scars proudly, like battle wounds because everything we've survived has made us who we are today: better, stronger, and smarter.

It's time to pull our skeletons out of the closet and make them dance the tango.

We will no longer let our secrets fester inside. We will no longer live in the dark.

All are welcome.
