Dose Of Happy: Jailbreak

<a href="http://bandbacktogether.com/post/3752//"><img src="http://static.bandbacktogether.com/media/images/2013/02/Dose_Of_Happy_Monday.jpg"></a>

Last week I participated in a race called The Jailbreak.

Actually, it was more of an adventure. I just wasn’t content to try a regular old 5K, I had to go for the one that included obstacles. Things like crawling through a drainage pipe, climbing a wet and muddy A-frame with a soaking wet rope, carrying concrete weights while weaving through barrels, and crawling through a mud pit to get to the finish line.

Climbing the cargo net was possibly the single scariest thing I’ve ever done in my life - especially when I had to go over the top - but I made it, shaky hands and all.

Dose of Happy: Surprise Party

This last week I had my five year old granddaughter stay with me.

Her mom is on vacation and my husband is on a business trip so it was just her and I for a week together.

One day we had a surprise party for my doberman, Blue.

My granddaughter made a decoration of construction paper cut outs glued together and colored a Spiderman picture. I made a sign: “Surprise Blue” to which she had me add “and Snowflake” because that was her dog name in our ongoing pretend game. We spent two days whispering and planning while Blue was in another room.

Finding The Light

Change can be frightening and difficult for some people, but for others it can be empowering.

This is her story.

This world of mine changes so quickly and drastically, I can hardly keep up.

A year ago I was physically in the same location as I am now, but I can hardly recognize my past self.

A year ago, I was in a serious, long-term, committed relationship. I threw myself into it, determined and convinced that we would be together forever. I was going to marry this boy.

A year ago, I was so delighted to have my best friend back in the country that I spent time with no one but her. My weekdays were spent with the boyfriend. My weekends were reserved for my best friend. We were each others’ top priority.

Project Happy: Mollie Day

February is all about The Happy.

We here at Band Back Together know that winter and the holidays can feel overwhelming, The Depression starts rearing its ugly head.

We’re saying goodbye to depression and hello to Project Happy.

So, The Band, what makes you happy?

What brings a smile to your face? Is it a memory? The thought of the future? The brilliance of a sunset? We want to know!

This year for Valentine’s Day we decided that there would be no presents. It’s not like we could have afforded presents anyway; money is just non-existent these days or something.

What we decided to do instead of celebrate some manufactured holiday was to celebrate Mollie Day. See, our fur-baby came to live with us two years ago around Valentine’s Day. We named her Mollie, and she is the best dog EVER.

Dose of Happy: Changes

BandBackTogether Dose of Happy Linkup Button

They say the only thing certain in life is change.

I prefer to think of life’s changes as new beginnings. This way, the fear of the unknown is replaced with the excitement of possibility.

This past week has been full of change, both personal and professional. Today marks changehere, a new beginning.

I will now be happily, and proudly, bringing you the Dose of Happy each Monday. And today? Marks The Band’s two year anniversary.

So as BB2G embarks on yet another year of busting down stigmas, I’ll be here, making sure we remember the good.

And that? Makes me HAPPY!

**************************

What’s your Happy?

Don’t think you have one? Look harder. Something will make you smile today.

We want to know!

Share it with the world on your blog and then link up at Band Back Together, tweet it out (hashtag #DOHMonday #WithTheBand) or share it on Facebook. Whatever you want to do, do it. Just find a bit of happy in this Monday!

A Wedding To Remember

My ex-husband is still one of my best friends. He’s intelligent, witty, good-looking and a great artist. I knew he was bisexual when we met and dated, it was no big deal because so am I. That’s not the reason we got divorced, although I know some people think it is. We just grew apart, as happens when people get married too young.

Our marriage occurred in August of 2000 - the wedding was one headache after another. At first we wanted a wedding, but then The Dad offered us $500 to elope. So we decided to go to a courthouse. Then, out of nowhere, I decided I wanted a “real” wedding again. Because my ex-husband didn’t care one way or the other, he was okay with that.

We then proceeded to throw a wedding togetherin under three months. See, I was still in college, and I wanted to get married before my last semester started, because I didn’t want to deal with both things at once. It was actually a very pretty wedding, and relatively cheap.

It was cheap because we were doing things at the last minute. That meant we had to work around other peoples’ schedules. Because of this, we were offered discounts for doing things like using white roses instead of lilies, or buying both cakes at the same place.

Dose of Happy: The Sun Is Back!

sun

Guess what, ladies and gentleman?

THE SUN HAS MADE AN APPEARANCE.

That’s right, after a ridiculously long hiatus, the sun is back in action and that makes me UBER HAPPY. (Sitting in a park enjoying the sun as pictured above makes me super DUPER happy!)

You know that phrase, “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone?” Yeah, it’s kind of like that for me.

You see, I lived in California where the sun shines without hesitation. Then I moved to a dark, dreary part of the world where the sun disappears for at least half the year.

When I lived in California, I never took the time to appreciate how good the sun makes me feel. But as soon as it was gone, I missed it something fierce. (Seasonal Affective Disorder is a real thing, guys!)

Now that the sun is BACK, I love and appreciate it more than ever. It makes me feel so good.

If you live in a sunny place, take a moment to just let the rays hit your face and feel the warmth.

It’s such a simple pleasure, but some of us don’t have it often :)

My Happy

My happy is …

the warmth of the sun on my face.

belly laughs from my nieces or grandkids.

spending the day hiking in the woods.

sharing good food with good friends.

finishing a project and realizing I made it.

traveling to new and old places.

finding a penny on the ground.

running into an old friend.

stumbling upon unexpected treasures.

watching the sun rise and set.

the first day of vacation.

spending the day with my granddaughter.

receiving a smile.

the worker at the minimart knowing my order.

turning frowns upside down.

the first page of a new book.

knowing each day is a new beginning.

trying a new recipe and having it turn out well.

receiving an unexpected kind word.

Halloweenies.

discovering I have a lot to be happy about.

One Big Band Back Together Family

If you’d like to help out behind the scenes, we’d love to have you! Email chibi@bandbacktogether.com

Or, at the very least, share your story.Everyone has a story. We’re not all brave enough to tell it.

Tell yours.

-AB

It’s no secret I have trust issues.

I mean, I’ve got a tattoo about it. I’ve made a career out of being distrustful of new people. In turn, they’ve all made it worse.

I thought I’d found a group of people who’d accepted me for who I am; like a family, only to have them turn on me when I questioned their group mentality. Where I thought I’d found friends, I found more hurt, more betrayal.

I decided I was done with people. Completely.

Then, I found The Band.

Let Me Tell You About My Cats

Nearly six million adults in the US live with bipolar disorder.

This is her experience.

I admit it: I’m a cat lady.

Not only that; because I’m bipolar it means I’m a “crazy cat lady.” I even have a crazy cat lady costume in my costume closet in case of emergency fancy dress parties.

But you know what? I’m proud of being a cat lady because it means I’m one of the luckiest ladies in the world.

My cats are one of the greatest joys in my life. No matter how crappy I’m feeling, I have at least one creature in the world who cares about me. My cats don’t judge me (except maybe Mima) and they don’t see me as a failure. I don’t have kids and I don’t want them. Honestly, I have no maternal feelings at all for human babies, but if I hear a tiny kitten cry I go into hormonal overdrive.

About

Band Back Together is a group weblog that provides educational resources as well as a safe, moderated, supportive environment to share stories of survival. Through the power of real stories written by real people, we can work together to destigmatize mental illness, abuse, rape, baby loss and other traumas so that we may learn, grow, and heal.

On Band Back Together, we put a face to things not normally discussed. We are the face of depression. We are the face of baby loss. We are the face of mental illness. We are the face of abuse. We are the face of rape. We are the face of SURVIVORS and we are proud to be here. We wear our scars proudly, like battle wounds because everything we've survived has made us who we are today: better, stronger, and smarter.

It's time to pull our skeletons out of the closet and make them dance the tango.

We will no longer let our secrets fester inside. We will no longer live in the dark.

All are welcome.
