September 11, 2001 was a date that will forever remained etched in our hearts and minds. It was a day that the world became less innocent, people banded together, and we learned what it is like to have unmentionable tragedies happen on our front door.
Last year, for the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, Band Back Together hosted a carnival of posts written by people who were there, people who watched, and people who lost those they loved.
United, in fact, we do stand.
As we live in California, I wasn’t directly affected by the events of September 11, 2001.

Today we Band Together to remember 9/11.
As everyone knows, ten years ago today, my city, my country, and the world changed irrevocably; all were diminished forever.
This is one of those touchstone moments, that everyone who was alive and old enough to be cognizant knows exactly where they were, who they were with, what they were doing at the exact moment that they heard the news of the planes hitting the Twin Towers, the towers falling.
Some didn’t have to “hear the news” as they were close enough to see, hear, feel the event itself. My friend Peter was working in the towers, his life saved by a forward thinking manager who told his people to get out and go home, in spite of what the building management people were telling him.

Today we Band Together to remember 9/11.
We started to notice things were wrong during second period. Teachers were pulled out with serious whispers, then students began leaving one by one. I was called out during 4th period –
6th grade science. I was 10. The office was packed with panicked parents. My mom told me three planes had crashed and several were missing. My dad was on a plane from Dallas to Chicago and was out of touch until 2pm CST.
My mom brought my brother and me to a neighbor’s house. I was sent upstairs with two kindergarteners and a toddler and was told to keep the TV off while our mothers watched the news downstairs and sobbed. I passed by the tv a few times to bring lunch up to the little kids and was blown away.
There are no sufficient words to describe the magnitude of that day.

the heartache
the heroic acts
the unity
and eventually
the hope.

Of course I will always remember that day. Who won’t? What I never expected was that ten years down the road, I would finally feel the aftershock of that day.

The day my childhood ended – the day I became an adult – wasn’t the day I graduated high school. It wasn’t the day I graduated college, either. It wasn’t the day I got married. It wasn’t the night I became a mother, or the night I met my husband.

Within days of the 9/11 attacks, I tried to purge my fears and find peace in the following thoughts: “Like millions of others I watched with horror as the horrific events played out this week. The report most disturbing to me was of a street scene in the middle east somewhere, where the people were joyously celebrating the harm done to America. I saw a boy, no more than twelve years old, jumping up and down with his fists raised in victory, a big smile on his face. I wondered how such a thing could be, that people would rejoice such suffering and destruction.

I was not going to write anything today. September 11, 2011. Words are my thing. I tell stories. I share small details of lives. But this is not my story. I feel inadequate to speak on this. I did not lose someone I loved, or even someone I knew. What is the process for sharing the stories of others? Because it is something I try never to do. I usually stay silent. I’m not sure how my story fits in. It is so little compared to the grief of those who lost so much that day. This morning I watched as they read the names at the 9/11 Memorial. I wept.
When people fall into the “where were you” conversation, and every year when we watch the footage on tv, Thomas always tells his story.

It was just another Tuesday morning. My best friend and I went to an early breakfast. I had to be at work by 8, so we met at 7 and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast. I don’t remember what I had. It hardly seems to matter now. I know we talked about our boyfriends. Hers was working on tug boats and was in New York Harbor. Mine was starting his senior year of high school (I’d graduated in May). I went to work. She went to babysit until she had to be at work (we both worked at the same place). We would see each other that afternoon. I worked in a sub place; we sliced all our own meats and cheeses, so there was always prep work to be done before we opened. The other staff and I always had the radio blaring-not necessarily listening to it over our chatter, but it was on. I remember we were laughing, talking about life in general when the morning show we were listening to starting talking about a plane hitting the World Trade Center in New York.

Can’t imagine I will ever forget. I wasn’t personally impacted by the tragedy of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. I didn’t lose a loved one that day. But I was indeed impacted. We all were. We lived in the San Francisco Bay Area. My husband worked full-time in retail and I worked part-time as a church secretary. Each morning, I’d wake up, take a shower, and turn on Good Morning Americaas I grabbed a cup of coffee. When I turned on the TV that morning, I saw smoke coming off the first tower hit and Charlie Gibson speculating about what had happened. They said that an airplane had hit the tower, but they didn’t yet know what kind of plane or if it was an accident. I went to the bedroom to wake up my husband, told him what was happening and he got in the shower. When I got back to the TV, I saw the second plane hit. And all hell broke loose on the usually merry little morning show. I ran to the bathroom and told my husband another plane hit the other tower so this is apparently happening ON PURPOSE. He was in disbelief. I think he needed to see it for himself.

I was 16-years old, living in my parents condo in Evanston, IL – a junior at Evanston Township High School. I didn’t have a first period class like most of the school, so I woke on September 11th, 2001 to the sound of my dad’s feet running across our floors. All the phones started ringing. The house phone. My dad’s cell phone. Suddenly the TV started blaring. I knew something was happening.

That date will never leave my mind or heart. The date when I realised that the world did not feel safe anymore – especially here in the USA. Suddenly, my protective instincts as a mother became clear – what kind of world was I bringing my children into? I had returned from Ireland the Friday before with Micaela who was three-and-a-half and about four months pregnant with Brian. That was the first blessing. That I got to return safe and sound from the land of my birth to my adopted one.
