BB2G Calendar: November - I Am The Face Of

Oh hey! *waves excitedly*

We’ve been working hard behind the scenes here at the Band to bring you a most special gift for the new year. We’ve been working on creating a calendar. I KNOW. It’s very exciting indeed.

We knew we wanted to feature some of our very own Band members, but we also wanted to feature some of the conditions that we are the face of. Because here at the Band we are the face of many things, and we want people to know that we’re not afraid to own those things and talk about them.

In addition to asking 13 folks to take a pretty picture for us, we also sat down with them to discuss what condition each is the face of, and what they have to say about it.

BB2G Calendar: July - I Am The Face Of

Introducing our very own Mrs One Day, who is up in July 2013 and representing the face of Infertility.

What brought you to the Band?

I came to the band after following the link from Aunt Becky’s page. It couldn’t have come at a better time either. I suffer from a variety of medical issues and I desperately needed a place to go where I could discuss my problems without ridicule or judgement. I couldn’t get signed up quickly enough!

How has this condition changed your life?

Infertility is something that carries a lot of stigma with it and I felt the judgement and pity everywhere I turned. It has stolen so much from me and that makes me so angry and sad. Being around my pregnant friends and family is so hard no matter how happy I am for them. I know I’ll never know the joy of motherhood, but I’m getting stronger every day and I refuse to let infertility take any more from me. My husband is incredibly supportive and we may not have children, but we have each other and for that I am eternally grateful.

What advice would you give to others about your condition?

Don’t let infertility define you. You are so much more than that. Don’t ever think that you are less of a woman (or man) simply because you are unable to conceive children. Realize that it is okay that you’re angry and sad. If you weren’t upset then you wouldn’t be human. Talk to someone you trust whether it’s a friend or family member or a professional counselor, you need to talk about how you feel. Don’t blame yourself because you can’t conceive. It’s not your fault and you still deserve love and happiness in your life.

What myth about your condition do you wish people would stop believing?

That I am less of a woman because I’m infertile. My womanhood is not defined solely by being able to conceive children. I have a lot to offer as a woman aside from motherhood. My husband and I can still enjoy a full and happy life.

What is your favorite band or musician?

Gosh this is a hard one! Music is such a big part of my life and I enjoy so many different genres of music that it is difficult to choose just one. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Melody Gardot and Edith Piaf. I guess I’m channeling my inner torch singer. I am huge into rock music as well as country, so I love everything from Joan Jett to AC/DC to Rob Zombie to Keith Urban to Carrie Underwood. I love it all! (except rap. I’ve tried but I just don’t get it.)

What is your favorite dessert?

PIE!! Anybody that knows me knows that I am obsessed with pie. I love all desserts to be honest, but pie is comfort food. My favorite flavor is Key Lime. Oh geez, I need some now!

About

Band Back Together is a group weblog that provides educational resources as well as a safe, moderated, supportive environment to share stories of survival. Through the power of real stories written by real people, we can work together to destigmatize mental illness, abuse, rape, baby loss and other traumas so that we may learn, grow, and heal.

On Band Back Together, we put a face to things not normally discussed. We are the face of depression. We are the face of baby loss. We are the face of mental illness. We are the face of abuse. We are the face of rape. We are the face of SURVIVORS and we are proud to be here. We wear our scars proudly, like battle wounds because everything we've survived has made us who we are today: better, stronger, and smarter.

It's time to pull our skeletons out of the closet and make them dance the tango.

We will no longer let our secrets fester inside. We will no longer live in the dark.

All are welcome.
